Although the fun season of summer officially ends in late September, back-to-school bells ring for students every August. Seems so unfair! To help ease the pain of this early transition, why not look on the bright side? Every seasonal change means happy times for fashion lovers, as new trends and styles reveal themselves. Out with the old, in with the new, even with your cosmetics. Bye-bye bronzers, hello new colors! It鈥檚 time to reinvent yourself and strut school hallways wearing A+ fall makeup designed to turn heads. Read on to see what salon experts and  predict as the go-to makeup choices this year:

鈥 Say 鈥淚 Do鈥 to Dewy. Even though gleamy skin seems so very summerlike, the trend carries on for fall because  is always in style. Skin care specialists like this look because it鈥檚 best pulled off with a smooth complexion as the base. That means if you take care of your skin, the glow can start from within. You can add more polish with dewy foundations and highlighting sticks, designed to look fresh and youthful. Check on how to do it with .

鈥 Flatter Your Flush with Rosy Cheeks. As a perfect match to fresh-faced foundations, natural hues of  and bronzed peach complete your youthful complexion accents. Place powder blush up high on cheekbones, blending subtly toward temples to mimic the healthy tone you get after a workout- but without the sweat! Try a cream or stick blush to just swipe on easily for a well-placed flattering flush.

鈥 Add Sparkle to Eyes. For eyes, it鈥檚 a glittery disco flashback that鈥檚 coming back in style for late 2019. Patrick Ta, celebrity makeup artist says the secret lies in the application. 鈥淟ess is more when it comes to glitter鈥. To pull this off, keep your face makeup subtle, as in dewy or barely-there trends for fall. Choose gold sparkle to accentuate the brown eyeshadow palette you鈥檒l want in your backpack or get creative with colors you enjoy most. Glitter shadow pots can get messy, so easy does it! Look for some more tips on this trend . Which to buy? Look at .

鈥 Eyeliner Gets Seriously Creative. Many experts predict playful  this season. Not only will the cat eye style remain, but it gets colorful, and adds extra wings by extending the line another half inch in an upward swoop. Swap out black liner for blue, embrace smudgy lines for a casual classroom look, and even add bright green or similar shades above your normal earth tone liner or above the crease in eyelids. Sounds wild? It is, so experiment at home before showing off to your classmates. As with any bold eye look, keep your other cosmetics toned down.

鈥 Take a Load Off the Heavy Brow. Tired of trying to achieve perfectly filled-in eyebrows? Good news! Strong brows are losing some favor for fall, replaced instead with thinner,  The not-too-thin eyebrow achieves a soft look by using powder brow makeup rather than harsher pencils and extreme shape points. The natural, feathery brow trend is perfect to set off the fun eyeliners for 2019. Keeping only one facial feature strong is key for an appropriate back to school statement.

鈥 Go Easy on the Eyes with Neutral Eyeshadows. With a renewed emphasis on the 90鈥檚 smoky eye trend, only softer- take your lids to the , especially . You鈥檒l look cool for school sporting these classic colors that add allure while remaining obedient. Even those afraid to experiment with new techniques can be brave as the softer tones don鈥檛 scream out for stares from fellow students as you pass by. Instead, they鈥檒l accentuate your eye color and lash line. Perfect for daytime class functions!

Trends in makeup come and go, so choose what you think looks best. Ask fellow students to share their makeup finds and make fast friends as you venture into the back-to-school season. Ask for advice from your beautician, or better yet, visit a cosmetology school to explore the possibility of being an expert makeup artist or esthetician yourself. Trendsetters are drawn to cosmetology, so why not do it now?

It鈥檚 time to get that hair in shape for summer!
That鈥檚 right, I said hair. In shape. For the summer.

Pools, Beaches, Sun, Ocean, Heat, are all things that bring a big smile to my face. These are also things that give me a headache as a stylist.

It鈥檚 like a vicious cycle that happens year after year. People use and abuse their hair during the summer months, only to find that they have a mess to deal with when the change of season comes around.

So, what does end of summer hair look like? Usually, it has one or more of the characteristics listed below:
鈥 Extremely Dry
鈥 Damaged
鈥 Faded Color
鈥 A 鈥渂leached鈥 look from the sun
鈥 Uneven look to the color
鈥 Breakage
鈥 Unmanagable

Does any of this sound like you?

In the Salon, clients come to us to fix these mishaps and the truth is, most could be avoided and prevented with a little love and care.

Here are my top tips for getting and keeping your hair in shape for the summer.

1. Change your conditioner.

Summer locks need extra moisture, so now is a great time to switch to something that offers a little more moisture than usual. I鈥檓 also a big fan of adding a hair mask to my regimen once a week.

2. Invest in a leave-in conditioner.

Before you hop in the pool or make waves at the beach, make sure to thoroughly give your strands a spritz of a good leave in conditioner. Your hair will already have conditioners soaking, which will leave little room for drying minerals or chemicals from pool water to make their way into your hair.

3. UV Rays can affect your hair.

Ultra Violet Rays can lighten your hair, as well as dry it out much like what the sun does to our skin when we spend too long in the sun. Some leave in鈥檚 contain UV filters to assist with this problem; however, don鈥檛 be afraid to give your strands a quick blast from a can of sunscreen. Personally, I love to do this and the sunscreen also helps protect my scalp, especially where I part my hair.

4. Talk to your Stylist!

Talk with your Stylist! I鈥檒l say it again鈥 Don鈥檛 be afraid to talk with your Stylist. Tell them what your plans are and ask for their opinion. Stylists know their products, and if you talk with them and tell them about your hair challenges they will be able to recommend custom solutions.

5. Know when it鈥檚 time to let go.

At some point, you will have to come to terms with the truth. Excessively dry, overexposed and damaged hair can only be saved so many times before you need to get it cut. Be realistic about your hair goals and accept that just because your hair is still attached to your head, that it doesn鈥檛 mean it鈥檚 in the best condition it could be.

Help! I have an interview!  What do I do!

I鈥檓 not going to lie. When someone says this to me, I usually end up giggling. I watch people get themselves so worked up and they retreat so far back into their headspace that they psych themselves out. Having said that, yes, I know it鈥檚 not easy, and yes, interviews can be nerve-racking. However, it鈥檚 no reason, to convince yourself that you have failed even before you have begun. Let鈥檚 look at some ways that you can help get yourself prepared for the interview process.

Hold up! Process? There is a process???
Ladies and Gentleman, I give you your first tip to help get yourself prepared鈥

Know the interview process

Rarely will an interview be one step. You will not walk into a salon, sit with the owner for a few moments, and be offered a job on the spot. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN! Those hiring in this industry want to see what their potential employees can bring to the table; that information will not come from a five-minute conversation.

Don鈥檛 be surprised if you have to go through a few different phases such as phone, in person, and technical. When seeking employment, make sure you ask and understand what the interview process looks like for that particular employer. This is your first step to making sure you are prepared.

Next up鈥

Listen

If you are lucky enough to have been chosen for an interview, make sure to listen to what you are being told to do. What do you need to bring? Where are you to go? What time should arrive?

A bad first impression can easily happen by arriving late, forgetting your tools, or not following simple instructions. Some companies will require you to bring specific documents, while others will be more relaxed. Some may require finding your own models when presenting technical skills, while others will have services performed on their own employees. Whatever the case is, make sure you know what will be needed.

尝补蝉迟濒测鈥

Be you

This is your art and your chosen career. Hopefully, you will be happy and successful for many years to come. When you are interviewing, remember to be yourself. Ask the questions you would ask. Respond the way you would normally respond. Proudly display your own professional image.

Be honest with yourself. Are you trying to be something you are not? Are you trying to be what the employer wants you to be? Are you convinced this is the only way you will get hired?

Remember, this isn鈥檛 all about the employer or interviewer picking you. This is about you choosing the employer. You are deciding that this is where you want to work because it鈥檚 right for you. Be sure you are in an environment that will motivate and inspire while helping you to grow. Don鈥檛 be afraid to be honest with yourself, and yes, even a little picky. Your career should be rewarding, and you have every right to enjoy the place where you work.

Good Luck!

Dress Professionally.

This is what I was told way back in beauty school when I asked what I should wear to an interview. Honestly, there were two simple words that held no meaning to me whatsoever.

We hear it all the time: 鈥淒ress professionally鈥, 鈥淵ou need to look professional!鈥 However, one thing I don鈥檛 see is someone explaining what 鈥淒ressing Professionally鈥 actually means or looks like.

Let鈥檚 chat about that.

Dress Professionally.

鈥淧rofessional Dress鈥 means different things to different people. For kicks, I asked three of my coworkers what they thought Professional Dress meant, and with no surprise, I received three different answers. 鈥淲ell, it depends on the job,鈥 was one answer. 鈥淏utton down shirt and slacks,鈥 was another. The third was a little more specific, 鈥淐lean and sharp lines. Not a day at the beach.鈥

So, why is this important? Well, because each company, brand, salon, etc. all have their own style- a particular image they want consumers to see and buy into. Every company, shop, store 鈥 everyone has their own particular image. Ru Paul said it best,

鈥淲e鈥檙e all born naked and the rest is drag!鈥

Our image is a representation of ourselves. It鈥檚 how we choose to express ourselves to the world and all those in it. Image affects everything from the friends we choose, the relationships we get into, and yes, even landing a job. In the Beauty Industry, our image is how we express ourselves to potential employers, and we need to start taking it seriously. The question we face: Are potential employers willing to buy into us? Is our image what they are looking for? Let鈥檚 look at a few things to keep in mind when it comes to dressing for success in the beauty industry.

Understand what Professional means

o The word Professional is defined as 鈥榚xhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.鈥
o How does this relate to your current style/image? Do you look workplace appropriate?

How you dress for an interview is part of your 鈥楩irst Impression鈥 opportunity

You only get one. Make it a good first impression.

Look through your potential employer’s eyes

o Take a long look in the mirror. Study yourself head to toe. Would you hire you based on your appearance alone?
o Remember, the best way to start to show your skillset is on yourself-Walk the walk with your hair, nails, etc.

Showcase your Style

o Are your hair/nails/makeup/clothing supporting your image or hurting it?
o Remember, your style should not be something such as 鈥渏ust got out of bed鈥 or 鈥渓ate night party at a nightclub鈥 or even 鈥済oing to the beach with friends.鈥 Before I get hate mail for saying this, let me be clear. There is a time and a place for these styles, such as when you get out of bed or when you are at the beach; however, an interview is NOT that place. EVER.

Head to Toe

o Dressing professionally isn鈥檛 just an outfit in your style, it鈥檚 also an attitude. Wear it proudly.
o Don鈥檛 forget about feet! You might be surprised how an outfit and a job opportunity can be ruined by a pair of flip-flops. I鈥檓 serious on this one. I have actually seen this happen.

Prep the night before

O Choose your outfit the night before and decide how you will wear your hair and any cosmetics. This will eliminate the stress of trying to figure something out the next day.
O Make sure to try everything on. Does your blouse need to be pressed? Did you find a random hole in your pants? You don鈥檛 want to have a wardrobe mishap right before you need to leave, and you really don鈥檛 want your potential employer focusing on your faded shirt.
O Make sure to gather all supplies or documents you need for the interview. Again, having it all in one place helps ease nerves.

Is your heart in it?鈥..

o Do you really want this job? If so, ACT like it. Work for it. Own it. Be yourself.
o Don鈥檛 be surprised by bad news if you didn鈥檛 really even try. I鈥檝e seen too many skilled stylists miss a job opportunity due to their attitude, or lack of.

Is your heart in it?鈥..

Some ladies call it a topknot; others call it a bun.  Whatever you call it, this hairstyle is absolutely perfect for hot summer weather.  Topknots almost seamlessly move from the classroom and office to a night out with friends or a day at the beach almost seamlessly.  And, you can change it up every day for a continually fresh look.

Get Your Hair into a High Pony

You鈥檒l need two hair bands, a few bobby pins and some hairspray to get it right.  It鈥檚 always easiest to have both bands around your wrist to start.

Pull your hair into a high pony. Turning your head upside down is always the easiest way to achieve the height.

鈥 If you want a sleek, smooth bun, brush your hair first and add a small amount of gloss through your strands.
鈥 For a messy topknot, you don鈥檛 need to do much but pull your hair up into a pony.
鈥 If you have very straight hair, you may want to curl the ends first to make it easier to work with, and so the tips don鈥檛 appear spiky in the finished look.

Twist the Ends

With your pony positioned high on your head, take all your hair into your hands and twist. You鈥檙e swirling over the area with the hair band. Secure with the second hair band.

If you want a messier or looser topknot, you may want to pull your pony forwards and backwards before you twist to loosen the hairs outside of the pony.

Fix the Ends

Unless you have very long hair all over, you鈥檙e likely to have a few ends that slip out of the second hair band.  Secure these into your bun with bobby pins.  Alternatively, you can pull a few more strands out or tug gently on sections from the topknot to create a deeper texture.

Play Around with This Look

As with just about any hairstyle, a topknot always looks best when you鈥檝e had a little fun with it or made it your own. Try these ideas for a distinctive look.

鈥 Leave a section of hair out of the twist. Braid it and wrap the end into the second hair band.
鈥 Divide your high pony into a few different sections,  turn and secure each one individually.
鈥 Tie a small scarf around the base of your topknot (almost like a headband for your bun) to hide bobby pins or just because.
鈥 Bring your hair up into the high pony with a French twist or an upside down French braid.

In the previous blog we talked about the Right Way to Contour Your Face.  Next, we will move on to Highlighting. Take a peek at the steps below for step 2 of a perfectly sculpted face!

Prep for Face Highlighting:

Apply a base. You will need foundation under your highlight and contour, whether you are doing a liquid highlight and contour, or a powder one, you will need a base.

Your base depends on the type of contouring and highlighting you are doing, If you are doing a liquid one, your base might be foundation. If you are doing a powder one, your base might be powder.

Start with your basic makeup application, like your foundation and concealer. Then you can do the contouring and highlighting as an extra step.

Option 1 – make a triangle shape under the eye.

How To Highlight Your Face:

If you want to use a highlighting concealer, like me, grab one that is two to three shades lighter than your foundation shade. Highlight under your eyes. For this there are two ways you can apply your highlight product.

Option 1: Start at the inner corner of your eyes and go down to your nose, then go up to the edge of your eye. This should create a triangle shape; then fill that in with products (no need to be cautious or heavy, you鈥檙e going to blend this in). Blend with a blending brush, a beauty blender, foundation brush, or concealer brush.

Option 2: Go all the way to your temples. Follow Option 1 but, but instead of going to the edge of your eye, you will go all the way to your temples.

Continue by drawing a thin, straight line down the middle of your nose. Now go to your forehead. Draw a straight line right above your nose, which means right in the middle of your forehead. Then draw two lines on either side of that other vertical line. These two lines will follow the shape of your eyebrows.  Again, perfection is not needed; you can be very haphazard with this part.  You鈥檒l blend it every section at the end anyhow.

A translucent powder on a fluffy powder brush all over the face will work great!

For your cupids bow (just above you upper lip), just follow the natural lines of your face. For your chin, you can draw horizontal lines or vertical lines on the highest point of the chin.

For the sides of the face draw dots on the high points of your cheek bones, and go in a 鈥淐鈥 shape twice down the side, and you鈥檒l naturally hit all the high points. Blend, blend, blend, and blend. I cannot stress this enough when it comes to highlight and contour technique.

The idea is to make it look natural, not cake-y! Whatever brush or method you choose, make sure it is well blended because the concealer is two to three shades lighter than your foundation shade, so you don鈥檛 want white stripes all over your face. Set the highlighting. Grab a lighter powder than your regular setting powder, and lightly stipple it onto the concealer. Setting this will help your concealer not to crease.

Face Highlight Tips:

Highlighter should be almost the color of your skin, with just a hint of shine, in my opinion. Avoid anything with noticeable sparkles, which can look chalky or just plain unnatural. (Remember you鈥檙e not on stage!) Find a formula that mimics your skin鈥檚 texture so it just looks more believable.

If you have fair skin, a pearly shade works well, but those with medium and dark complexions need a warmer golden highlighter for a glow that looks natural, not pasty. Highlighter can be pressed or loose powder, cream (best applied with your fingers), or concealer. There is no 1 correct product for everyone; you may have to experiment to get the perfect one for you!

Highlighting is especially important when you’re contouring because it brings the light back into your face. But once again, you don’t want to overdo it.

Quickly Highlight Your Face

A 30 second technique: lightly coat your pointer, middle, and ring fingers with highlighter, and then rub them against the same fingers on the other hand. Tap your fingers up and down your cheekbones, and then dab whatever鈥檚 left over on your brow bones, the center of your chin, and just one tap on the tip of your nose.

Boom! Done! Knowing your face shape is key; you don鈥檛 want to over exaggerate any part of your face. Lastly, don鈥檛 forget the blush on the apples of the cheeks to put a flush back in!!

You want to Contour first, and then finish with your Highlight.

How to Contour Your Face

Highlighting and Contouring have taken the beauty industry by storm, and we owe a certain curvy celebutante a huge amount of thanKs with a capitol K for making this happen.

It may seem unnecessary if you鈥檙e not a makeup lover, but the results you can get from a few carefully placed makeup products can give incredible changes to the appearance of your face shape. I would definitely recommend highlighting and contouring for special occasions as opposed to every day looks (unless that鈥檚 your thing).

You would want to Contour first, and then finish with your Highlight. If you鈥檙e blessed with dramatic facial features then you can skip the process and just go straight to relishing your fabulous genes. This is part 1 of my 2 part series on a perfect highlight and contour application! You can try each part separately, or together depending on what your desired end result is. Take a peek below for steps to getting a perfectly sculpted face!

Apply foundation that matches your skin tone.

Before you begin:

Apply a base. You will need foundation under your highlight and contour, whether you are doing a liquid highlight and contour, or a powder one, you will need a base. While the formula you use is up to you, make sure you鈥檙e consistent. That means using all cream or all powder products鈥攆rom your foundation to your blush. Layering different textures can cause a caked-on effect, and it won鈥檛 blend as seamlessly Start with your basic makeup application, like your foundation and concealer. Then you can do the contouring and highlighting as an extra step.

As you contour stay close to the hairline.

Contour How-To:

It all starts with the right product and you only need two: a matte shading cream or powder and a highlighter. If you鈥檙e using a cream, you can use your own fingers to apply it since the natural heat from your body will help it melt into the skin! If you鈥檙e more comfortable with a powder, use one that goes on more sheer. The idea behind a contour is to sculpt out stronger features in the face, naturally. You want to place product where your face recedes already, or where you want to 鈥榮lim down鈥 a wide nose or round face.

Stippling brush

  • Use your finger or brush to apply under the cheekbones in the natural hallows.
  • Add a small amount under the chin, and along jaw line to create a narrow jaw line.
  • To thin your nose, apply on each side beginning at the bridge of the nose.
  • Use a clean brush to buff out any harsh lines, preferably a stippling brush (2 different type of bristles on the same brush).

Blend, blend, blend, and blend. I cannot stress this enough when it comes to highlight and contour technique. The idea is to make it look natural, not cake-y! Set it all with translucent powder by sweeping all over the face with a large fluffy powder brush.

In keeping with the idea of shadows, look for formulas with a grayish cast and stay away from anything too red or orange, like most bronzers tend to be. Avoid the fake bake effect!!

Face Contour Tips:

Consider your skin tone. Anything that stands out too much against skin is going to look obvious, which is the opposite of what you want. If you鈥檙e fair skin, use a contouring cream or powder that鈥檚 one shade darker than your skin tone.  If you鈥檙e medium/deep naturally skin , use a contour product that is two shades darker than your skin tone.

The right tools are also equally critical. Ever heard the phrase 鈥榓n artist is only as good as the tools she uses?鈥 Exactly. Using creams? Use your fingers. They warm the makeup so it melts and blends flawlessly into your skin. If you鈥檙e working with powder, I recommend brushes with natural bristles. They鈥檙e soft, so you鈥檙e less likely to overdo it. The shape of the brush is also important, and lets you really control the placement.

You don鈥檛 want to look like you have a giant bruise on your cheek. Don鈥檛 be afraid to make a 鈥榝ish face鈥 to find the natural hallows of your face to make contouring super simple! Finished contouring? Great! Now you can move onto the grand finale: the Highlight!

Clipper Guy

June is a busy show month for the beauty industry. This includes . As I walked the floor at a big trade show recently I reflected on how one can maximize their show experience. 聽Below are my top five tips for extracting all you can from the limited time of a trade show.

Plan your time 鈥 Show days are long, but they fly by. Map out your day in advance. If you can get the class schedule ahead of time go through it with a highlighter and a sharpie. Plan you day around the classes you wish to attend and fill the gaps in between with time on the show floor. If you cannot get the book in advance, be to the show early. Grab a program and lay out your day before the show opens. Plan you day and get the most from the experience.

Set a budget for show purchases 鈥 Have a list of things you need and want. Do research ahead of time so you have a good idea of retail prices and can spot TRUE show deals. Resist impulse purchases. Many show vendors offer true show only deals. Others will honor show pricing a few weeks after an event. Shop wisely.

Go solo 鈥 Stylists like to travel in packs. Attend the show with friends to share gas, hotel and other costs, but hit the floor solo. Go to classes with friends if you all agree on priorities, but be open to splitting off on your own for programming that is truly important to you. Eliminating the distraction of friends will help you learn more and experience everything.

Stay for the entire class 鈥 Resist the urge to get up and move on. Every presentation has value. The value might not be apparent in the first fifteen minutes. Great presenters offer an opening a body and a close to their sharing. Stay the course and see/hear their vision through. That being said, truly horrible presentations are painful. Cut bait and find the next classroom before it is too late.

Take pictures 鈥 Your memory is not as good as your camera. This is a visual industry. Take a lot of pictures. Use the images you capture for social media posts, style books and your own learning diary. Share images with co-workers and fellow students. Discuss what you have seen and how it relates to your beauty realities.

Hit the show with a plan and you are sure to make them most of it. You will be eager to go to another show next year. Shows will become an important part of your ongoing industry education.

Happy clippering
Ivan
