Are you trying to decide which type of schooling will help you reach your end goal? We know it may be tricky- researching your schooling options, types of programs, possible career paths, and finances. At 海角社区, we work together to make this process as seamless as possible. Let鈥檚 compare the differences between a beauty school and a cosmetology school.

海角社区 student.

What is the difference between beauty school and cosmetology school?

Beauty school and cosmetology school is oftentimes used to describe the same type of schooling. The difference between the two, is that beauty school is mostly used to describe a school that has a variety of beauty programs and a cosmetology school’s primary focus is cosmetology.

To simplify this, a beauty school might offer programs in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, makeup, and nails. Choosing a beauty school allows you to receive in-depth training about the area of beauty you are most interested in. While a cosmetology school has a larger focus on hair; hair color, styling, cutting, chemical services and more.

A cosmetology license also includes training on additional beauty trades such as skin, makeup, nails, and barbering. If you are looking for training in all aspects of cosmetology, a cosmetology program is the perfect match for you.

AMOUNT OF HOURS

When considering the types of programs and schools, it is important to notice the amount of hours required to complete the program. For example, a cosmetology program will require a longer amount of hours to complete as you are learning all aspects of the beauty industry.

The 海角社区 Cosmetology program length will vary depending on your states required hours for licensure. Subjects include haircutting, hair coloring, facials, makeup, manicuring, salon management and much more.

HOW TO CHOOSE

If you love the flexibility of specializing in multiple areas and having the option to potentially choose a career change in the future without going back to school, cosmetology might be your route. This option offers endless job possibilities once graduation and licensure is complete.

For a beauty school, choosing a specific area of beauty is usually shorter in hour requirements and allows you to focus on your specific area of interest.

When considering your options, it is important to check if the school is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). 海角社区 does have this accreditation.

Enrolling at 海角社区 will provide you with a world-class education. With our program offerings, you have the opportunity to share your passion and make the world a more beautiful place.

Students at 海角社区 in Louisville, Kentucky are finding their purposes and living out their passions in the classroom and on the salon floor. Empire videographer, Chris Knight, sat down with some of these students and they shared with him the joys of being students at 海角社区 and their cosmetology goals for the future.

If there’s one major commonality to be found in Empire’s students, it’s the sense of support and community they find themselves surrounded by.

“If I could choose 海角社区 a hundred times, I would,” Ginna Sariento said. Sariento is a hair-coloring enthusiast who has enjoyed playing with hair and make-up her entire life. “They fully equip you physically and mentally. I think they’re really there for us when we need them. And I’ve been really appreciative of everything this school has given us.”

According to many students, the educators and students at Empire are all extremely invested in one another’s aspirations and goals. While students encourage one another, educators consistently make themselves available to help students and share in the joy of their triumphs.

“What really wowed me about Empire is their excitedness for me,” Brooklyn Wundrock said, who is also fascinated not only by hair-coloring but hair extensions. “They really pushed me. They could see the eagerness in my eyes of knowing that this is what I want to do. They really helped me and made me feel extremely welcome and comfortable here and compared to other schools that I looked into, that was something that really caught my eye with Empire.”

Some students feel that the connections they’ve made in the classroom and on the salon floor are akin to that of a family.

“They’re family,” student Autumn Martin said. “When you’re here, you build that family. It’s a sisterhood. Even when you graduate, you still have a family.”

The creative license that can be found in many aspects of cosmetology is one element of 海角社区 that appeals to many of its students. Hair coloring and styling, make-up artistry, and nail care all allow creative students to express themselves while also learning how to provide a quality service.

“Hair coloring is really like art to me,” Alexis Allen said. “I usually have a really fun color in my hair. That’s a lot of fun for me to be able to do that for someone, to make someone feel like a piece of art.”

Allen, who has been doing her own hair since she was 16, comes from a family of cosmetologists, including an aunt that actually graduated from Empire beauty school herself and encouraged her to attend.

Similarly to Allen, student Cady Mitchell, who came to 海角社区 to pursue her passion for make-up artistry, finds freedom in the creativity she is able to exercise through cosmetology.

“I’ve always had a passion for it,” Mitchell said. “I love the artistry in it and how there’s so many things that you can do with it and so many different things that you can create. There’s really no limit to what you can do.”

At 海角社区, there’s not only diversity in the practice of cosmetology, but also in the individuals involved, according to student Tanesha Muldrow.

“What I love about cosmetology is the creativeness and the fact that it brings together all different walks of women,” Muldrow said. “That there’s no right or wrong, so you can do whatever it is you set out to do and just expand from it. And I love the support system as well.”

More than anything, the one quality Empire possesses that continues to draw in students, is the opportunity to serve others. When asked about the most fulfilling part of their cosmetology journey, most Empire students shared that having the ability to not only connect with their clients but to impact them in a positive way is a driving force in what they do.

Brooklyn Wundrock is a shining example of this. After graduating from Empire, Wundrock plans to work at a salon that’s primary focus is restoring confidence to women who have experienced various diseases, postpartum hair loss, and more.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to the most,” Wundrock said. “To transform and give confidence back to those who have lost it. Everyone wants to be successful and be stable in their lives, but really just to give back to others, to give people back what they used to have and used to feel so confident in, but now feel like they have to go around hiding because of something that’s happened to them, so that’s what I want to do. I want to give back and give women the confidence that they once had.”

Regaining this sense of confidence is something that many students can relate to on a personal level, according to Tanesha Muldrow, who not only enjoys cutting hair but is also an EIT (Educator in Training) at Empire.

“Cosmetology shaped my whole entire life so to speak,” Muldrow said. “I had a lot of insecurities. I was broken. I didn’t know myself. So in being able to do hair and meet girls and things like that, I’m just back here to help young females who probably have an insecurity issue or something like that to just let them know that anything is possible. It starts with loving yourself. So a lot of cosmetology has to do with self-reflecting and beauty.”

In true Empire-fashion, the students at our Louisville Campus love seeing others succeed and overcome obstacles in pursuit of their goals. They encourage anyone who has ever considered cosmetology as a potential career path to go for it.

鈥淔ollow your heart if it’s something you really enjoy,” Ginna Sarmiento said. “Don’t second guess yourself. If you really enjoy it, and you think it’s something you will always enjoy, just do it.”

Although the fun season of summer officially ends in late September, back-to-school bells ring for students every August. Seems so unfair! To help ease the pain of this early transition, why not look on the bright side? Every seasonal change means happy times for fashion lovers, as new trends and styles reveal themselves. Out with the old, in with the new, even with your cosmetics. Bye-bye bronzers, hello new colors! It鈥檚 time to reinvent yourself and strut school hallways wearing A+ fall makeup designed to turn heads. Read on to see what salon experts and  predict as the go-to makeup choices this year:

鈥 Say 鈥淚 Do鈥 to Dewy. Even though gleamy skin seems so very summerlike, the trend carries on for fall because  is always in style. Skin care specialists like this look because it鈥檚 best pulled off with a smooth complexion as the base. That means if you take care of your skin, the glow can start from within. You can add more polish with dewy foundations and highlighting sticks, designed to look fresh and youthful. Check on how to do it with .

鈥 Flatter Your Flush with Rosy Cheeks. As a perfect match to fresh-faced foundations, natural hues of  and bronzed peach complete your youthful complexion accents. Place powder blush up high on cheekbones, blending subtly toward temples to mimic the healthy tone you get after a workout- but without the sweat! Try a cream or stick blush to just swipe on easily for a well-placed flattering flush.

鈥 Add Sparkle to Eyes. For eyes, it鈥檚 a glittery disco flashback that鈥檚 coming back in style for late 2019. Patrick Ta, celebrity makeup artist says the secret lies in the application. 鈥淟ess is more when it comes to glitter鈥. To pull this off, keep your face makeup subtle, as in dewy or barely-there trends for fall. Choose gold sparkle to accentuate the brown eyeshadow palette you鈥檒l want in your backpack or get creative with colors you enjoy most. Glitter shadow pots can get messy, so easy does it! Look for some more tips on this trend . Which to buy? Look at .

鈥 Eyeliner Gets Seriously Creative. Many experts predict playful  this season. Not only will the cat eye style remain, but it gets colorful, and adds extra wings by extending the line another half inch in an upward swoop. Swap out black liner for blue, embrace smudgy lines for a casual classroom look, and even add bright green or similar shades above your normal earth tone liner or above the crease in eyelids. Sounds wild? It is, so experiment at home before showing off to your classmates. As with any bold eye look, keep your other cosmetics toned down.

鈥 Take a Load Off the Heavy Brow. Tired of trying to achieve perfectly filled-in eyebrows? Good news! Strong brows are losing some favor for fall, replaced instead with thinner,  The not-too-thin eyebrow achieves a soft look by using powder brow makeup rather than harsher pencils and extreme shape points. The natural, feathery brow trend is perfect to set off the fun eyeliners for 2019. Keeping only one facial feature strong is key for an appropriate back to school statement.

鈥 Go Easy on the Eyes with Neutral Eyeshadows. With a renewed emphasis on the 90鈥檚 smoky eye trend, only softer- take your lids to the , especially . You鈥檒l look cool for school sporting these classic colors that add allure while remaining obedient. Even those afraid to experiment with new techniques can be brave as the softer tones don鈥檛 scream out for stares from fellow students as you pass by. Instead, they鈥檒l accentuate your eye color and lash line. Perfect for daytime class functions!

Trends in makeup come and go, so choose what you think looks best. Ask fellow students to share their makeup finds and make fast friends as you venture into the back-to-school season. Ask for advice from your beautician, or better yet, visit a cosmetology school to explore the possibility of being an expert makeup artist or esthetician yourself. Trendsetters are drawn to cosmetology, so why not do it now?

Change is in the air- you can see and feel its approach.

As you venture out to your favorite stores, you notice those cute summer outfits are hanging on clearance racks, replaced on displays by hoodies and shawls. The oh-so-inviting patio furniture setups are scarce, and the pretty pink flowers are gone too, replaced by autumn hues. Back-to-school items surround you, everywhere you look. Suddenly, it hits you. You get a lump in your throat as you think,

鈥淲ow! I鈥檓 going back to school and I鈥檓 getting scared.鈥

As a first-time beauty school student, your fears are valid. You鈥檙e not alone in your racing thoughts, keeping you up at night and increasing your daily snack intake to dangerously high levels. Well, let鈥檚 try to put down the chocolate, and prep the pillow to rest easy tonight. The jitters can be eased as the countdown to school start begins.

Here are some simple ways to beat back-to-school stress:

Build a friendly support network.

Summon the friends and family that helped you realize your dream career in cosmetology. You need them now more than ever to remind you that you鈥檝e got this! You鈥檝e already checked all the boxes and are ready to shine as the beauty school sensation you鈥檙e meant to be. Be sure to contact those you feel secure with when tension sets in. Confide in this network- they鈥檝e got your back through the good and bad.

Just breathe.

You鈥檝e most likely heard the buzz about mindfulness and meditation these days. There are lots of apps for the stress you feel.

When your mind just won鈥檛 shut off, try to refocus with help from Headspace, Calm, or Breathe2Relax, to hear a soothing voice instructing you to breathe deeply, lift the weight off your shoulders, and find peace with your decision to be a cosmetology student. Sounds hokey at first, but most are free, and they really do seem to work.

Banish negativity.

When faced with change, it seems inevitable that we think of every single situation that can go wrong, and fret about future doom. Retrain that circus in your head to instead see visions of success, and reaffirm the real reasons you鈥檙e taking this career leap. Quiet the naysayers and critics around you by pointing out how ready you are for all the wonderful possibilities your education will bring. Offer to be their future beauty consultant, and then do it!

Find an anxiety outlet.

Whatever you like to do as a hobby, whether it鈥檚 hitting the gym, a good movie, playing a game, or cooking, have it become your go-to stress remover. Having a side activity that takes your mind off your problems is the best way to refresh and refocus. If you already have one, go to it often. If you don鈥檛, try to find an activity that makes you feel good about yourself. Interesting activities minimize distractions and clears the mind for all your new cosmetology knowledge.

The key to these back-to-school stress relief tools is to keep your head up and be positive about facing change. You took a step to improve your life and you鈥檒l benefit from it. Embrace change- opportunity awaits. Be confident in your beauty school dream and you鈥檒l fret no more!

It鈥檚 not uncommon to feel worried as the time finally arrives, that magical moment when you鈥檒l follow your footsteps from the dream career in your heart to the reality of entering cosmetology school doors for your first class. Of course, you鈥檝e already weighed the pros and cons, consulted with family and friends, attained financial aid, and signed enrollment papers. The hard part is over- or so you thought! Rest assured, you鈥檙e not alone in the struggle to gain classroom confidence.

Here are some of the most common fear factors of first-time beauty school students, and some encouraging words to help ease those frazzled nerves.

1) Fear of Inadequacy.

Students from our Vernon Hills Campus.

As you envision your new life among fellow beauty school students, you may begin to have qualms about the following: Am I too old? Am I too young? Am I stylish enough? Am I smart enough? Relax, and know that it actually doesn鈥檛 matter. You鈥檙e unique, and having the drive to improve your future is all you need to succeed. Classes will contain a mixture of various age groups, personalities, cultures, and yes, intelligence. But that鈥檚 what makes beauty school a fun and versatile learning experience that you won鈥檛 get at home.

2) Fear of Failure.

This is probably a fear throughout life but seems to really surface during decisions involving change. The reason is simple: it鈥檚 about taking a risk. Rolling the dice, where the outcome is winning or losing. No one is ever certain what might happen in the end, but research helps us make wise decisions. Remind yourself that you鈥檙e in charge of your destiny, and seek help from the beauty school staff. Make use of counselors, financial aid advisors, and instructors. Failure happens when you don鈥檛 try.

3) Fear of not Fitting In.

Kim Latzy, student from our West Mifflin Campus.

Maybe high school wasn鈥檛 a happy place, and you鈥檙e afraid of a repeat scenario involving rejection. The good news is that beauty school is a totally different vibe. Cosmetology embraces creativity and the art of being different. Individuality shines, and ideas prevail. Be yourself, and don鈥檛 try to 鈥渇it鈥. You鈥檒l all become friends, in the end, each embracing differences together.

4) Fear of Financial Problems.

It will cost money at first, but think of it as an investment in yourself- the best kind! When you have a talent, those skills need to be nourished. It will need tools of the trade, advice, and certifications. Once your cosmetology knowledge grows and you have a new career, the investment pays off. The financial planning you鈥檝e done is key. Know in advance what the costs are, and seek assistance when necessary.

5) Fear of No Career.

Lady, student from our Northlake Campus. She passed the written and practical state board.

This is a big one. What if, after all of the time and effort, you don鈥檛 find a job in the beauty industry? Don鈥檛 fret. Students with a cosmetology degree from an accredited beauty school will improve their marketability in the job market significantly. Passing the state boards is proof to employers that you know what it takes to succeed. The best schools offer  and job leads to help you along the way. 海角社区 is connected to nearly 10,000 Regis salons and we have thousands of other salon connections as well. These connections assist our students in the first steps of their careers.

Once you begin your new routine…

Students from our Chenoweth Campus.

You鈥檒l be able to overcome fears as you meet other students, share ideas and a few laughs. Remember, you鈥檙e all in this journey as a team, and learning something new is never a bad idea!

For beauty professionals, Instagram is a great platform for social media marketing. But, with a projected 111 million active users by 2019, how can you make your feed stand out without hiring a professional photographer or Instagram influencer?

All it takes is a little know how!

Here are 6 great tips that will help you build a beautiful Instagram Account:

1.) Pick a theme

Ok, I know, it is easy to say that your theme is hair or makeup, but if you look under those hashtags, there are millions of posts about hair and make-up.  What kind of hairstyle is your specialty? Do you do amazing color? Are you and up-do expert? Are you a whiz with brows?  As a business owner, you want to do as much as you can, but to get attention in the crowded world of social media, you need to be a bit 鈥渘iche鈥 in the beginning.

2.) Use beautiful pictures

First, you need to ask your clients for permission, or if you are taking a picture from an internet site 鈥 give credit. Taking great pictures with your cell phone is not as hard as you think. There are many, many tutorials and resource out there on cell phone photography. Also, don鈥檛 be afraid to use outside apps and filters.

3.) Post Often

The key to developing followers is posting consistently.  While it may seem like a daunting task to keep up with posting every day while building a beauty empire, there are free scheduling apps like HootSuite can help plan a week鈥檚 worth of posting in no time!

4.) Hashtag

Hashtags were always important, but now, you can follow a particular hashtag on Instagram. You don鈥檛 need to use 30 in every post, but it is a good idea to study your competitors to find the right hashtags for your potential audience.

5.) Geotag

While it is awesome that you have followers in Dubai, you want to drive local clients to your business. Geo-Tagging helps the right people see your work.

6.) Engage

Many people think that you can just post a beautiful picture, add a bunch of hashtags, and followers will flood to your page.  What most people forget is that social media is a two-way street. When you engage with people who comment on your post and comment on your followers鈥 posts it makes Instagram鈥檚 mysterious algorithm very happy, and in turn, makes it easier for people to find you.

Now here comes the fun part!  Show off YOUR Instagram Feed. Post a link in the comments and help grow your flow!! Make sure you follow us on Instagram . Also, tag us in your photos so that we can view and possibly feature your creative work!

Dress Professionally.

This is what I was told way back in beauty school when I asked what I should wear to an interview. Honestly, there were two simple words that held no meaning to me whatsoever.

We hear it all the time: 鈥淒ress professionally鈥, 鈥淵ou need to look professional!鈥 However, one thing I don鈥檛 see is someone explaining what 鈥淒ressing Professionally鈥 actually means or looks like.

Let鈥檚 chat about that.

Dress Professionally.

鈥淧rofessional Dress鈥 means different things to different people. For kicks, I asked three of my coworkers what they thought Professional Dress meant, and with no surprise, I received three different answers. 鈥淲ell, it depends on the job,鈥 was one answer. 鈥淏utton down shirt and slacks,鈥 was another. The third was a little more specific, 鈥淐lean and sharp lines. Not a day at the beach.鈥

So, why is this important? Well, because each company, brand, salon, etc. all have their own style- a particular image they want consumers to see and buy into. Every company, shop, store 鈥 everyone has their own particular image. Ru Paul said it best,

鈥淲e鈥檙e all born naked and the rest is drag!鈥

Our image is a representation of ourselves. It鈥檚 how we choose to express ourselves to the world and all those in it. Image affects everything from the friends we choose, the relationships we get into, and yes, even landing a job. In the Beauty Industry, our image is how we express ourselves to potential employers, and we need to start taking it seriously. The question we face: Are potential employers willing to buy into us? Is our image what they are looking for? Let鈥檚 look at a few things to keep in mind when it comes to dressing for success in the beauty industry.

Understand what Professional means

o The word Professional is defined as 鈥榚xhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.鈥
o How does this relate to your current style/image? Do you look workplace appropriate?

How you dress for an interview is part of your 鈥楩irst Impression鈥 opportunity

You only get one. Make it a good first impression.

Look through your potential employer’s eyes

o Take a long look in the mirror. Study yourself head to toe. Would you hire you based on your appearance alone?
o Remember, the best way to start to show your skillset is on yourself-Walk the walk with your hair, nails, etc.

Showcase your Style

o Are your hair/nails/makeup/clothing supporting your image or hurting it?
o Remember, your style should not be something such as 鈥渏ust got out of bed鈥 or 鈥渓ate night party at a nightclub鈥 or even 鈥済oing to the beach with friends.鈥 Before I get hate mail for saying this, let me be clear. There is a time and a place for these styles, such as when you get out of bed or when you are at the beach; however, an interview is NOT that place. EVER.

Head to Toe

o Dressing professionally isn鈥檛 just an outfit in your style, it鈥檚 also an attitude. Wear it proudly.
o Don鈥檛 forget about feet! You might be surprised how an outfit and a job opportunity can be ruined by a pair of flip-flops. I鈥檓 serious on this one. I have actually seen this happen.

Prep the night before

O Choose your outfit the night before and decide how you will wear your hair and any cosmetics. This will eliminate the stress of trying to figure something out the next day.
O Make sure to try everything on. Does your blouse need to be pressed? Did you find a random hole in your pants? You don鈥檛 want to have a wardrobe mishap right before you need to leave, and you really don鈥檛 want your potential employer focusing on your faded shirt.
O Make sure to gather all supplies or documents you need for the interview. Again, having it all in one place helps ease nerves.

Is your heart in it?鈥..

o Do you really want this job? If so, ACT like it. Work for it. Own it. Be yourself.
o Don鈥檛 be surprised by bad news if you didn鈥檛 really even try. I鈥檝e seen too many skilled stylists miss a job opportunity due to their attitude, or lack of.

Is your heart in it?鈥..

The time has come! You were once a bright-eyed student absorbing information, skills, and knowledge in Pre-Salon, now you are a student who is older and wiser, ready to step out onto the Salon Floor!

Students who are in the process of transitioning usually have one of two types of reactions to this process. The first is complete and utter calm. They are eager and ready to get out on the floor and get their hands dirty. The second is the exact opposite. A tight jittery feeling, combined with the added reaction of the unknown, makes for an unsettling anxiety.

Whichever you identify with, it鈥檚 important to know this: It鈥檚 okay. Again, whichever way you are feeling, it鈥檚 completely normal and okay. This is a big step in your education, and everyone reacts differently. The important thing is to focus on moving forward. Think about all those hours spent in Pre-Salon. All that knowledge you now have. Hours of doing, redoing and then redoing yet again. All your time and energy was put in for this very transition.

So, what exactly should you be expecting on the Salon Floor? Well, let me break it down very simply by saying this: People! Glorious People! And you will have countless opportunities to take your skillset to the next level!

Yes, as you can tell, I get excited when I think about it. I love the Salon environment. It鈥檚 fast-paced, a bit crazy (like me!) and full of incredibly creative moments. As a cosmetologist, it鈥檚 what I live for. It鈥檚 what we are here to do! Think about some things you have learned. The Guest Process, Consultations, Services, etc. I get to become a rock star on the Salon Floor by combining all of those pieces together, creating a customized experience for everyone who sits in a chair.

It鈥檚 also a great opportunity for me to be honest with myself. I did not come out of Pre-Salon knowing or understanding all concepts or skills. I need to remain open-minded that there is still more to learn, and that there will always be more to learn, long after I graduate.

I will have many mentors along the way, including some who will rise to the occasion willingly and some who won鈥檛 even realize that they are teaching me. The extraordinary ones will even be able to teach me in a way that I won鈥檛 even know that I鈥檓 learning. Those experiences and feelings all start with my Salon Educator.

So, what鈥檚 my point? This is an amazing time in your career! This is the next step and you should be proud and excited to take it. So, yes, you may be ready or you may be freaking out internally, either way it鈥檚 ok. Understand that you are fully capable of succeeding. The only one you have to worry or focus on is yourself. Take what you have learned and put it to use. Sharpen and perfect your skills here while you are still in the comfort of school, then show the beauty world what you are made of. Take challenges as they come, and remain open-minded as you move forward. Shine on!

How Often Should I Color My Hair? /blog/fashion-trends/color-hair /blog/fashion-trends/color-hair#respond Mon, 05 Feb 2018 15:41:57 +0000 /blog/?p=9369 As a cosmetologist I can honestly tell you that one of the most popular questions I am asked is 鈥淗ow often should I color my hair?鈥 This question always makes me respond with another question: 鈥淗ow often do you WANT to color your hair?鈥 There are no set rules of how often you can do ... As a cosmetologist I can honestly tell you that one of the most popular questions I am asked is 鈥淗ow often should I color my hair?鈥 This question always makes me respond with another question: 鈥淗ow often do you WANT to color your hair?鈥 There are no set rules of how often you can do something or not do something in the world of beauty. You can do what you like, as often as you like as no one can stop you. However, there are some guidelines that I strongly suggest to follow when dealing with chemicals and your locks.

First, understand why this is a loaded question for cosmetologists. There are so many different types of color to choose from, and there are many different techniques that can be done. Each has its own time frame of when it will need to be retouched. For example, there are temporary colors, which as their name implies are not meant to last in the hair very long, and would require frequent coloring for upkeep. Permanent hair color PERMANENTLY changes the pigment in each one of your individual hair strands, and therefore will never actually leave the hair. New hair will grow from your scalp and that will need to be colored if you want to keep a uniform look.

Let鈥檚 also think about different types of color clients, because depending on what type of customer you are will also determine how often you should color your hair. For example, if a guest鈥檚 main concern with their hair color is grey or white coverage, depending on how fast their hair grows will normally determine how often he or she may need to come back to get a touch up. Now, you might be saying, yes, yes, I understand all of that, but what about when there is a mistake made?

Ah, yes, we have all been there. We decide to try something new and we end up standing in front of the mirror desperately trying to not scream at the top of our lungs while we hold back tears. So, you have a dreadful color and you need it fixed as soon as possible. So鈥ow long do I need to wait before getting it fixed?

I鈥檓 sorry my friends, but there is no one answer for that scenario. There are several things to take into consideration. What chemical process has your hair been through? For example, it鈥檚 much easier to change a color on someone who has only had one process done, rather than someone who has had their hair bleached twice and then toned. Sometimes it鈥檚 not about what you want. Sometimes it about what your hair can handle.

At the end of the day a great cosmetologist wants to make you happy. Happy with the services they have provided, but also with their talents and techniques.

Don鈥檛 be afraid to talk to your stylist. Ask them questions and listen to their answers, especially when dealing in the world of color.  Understand that one of our main concerns is the integrity of your hair. This may mean that we will have to say no to you once and a while, and believe me it鈥檚 always in your hair鈥檚 best interest.

Considering cosmetology school? Is this something that you have always wanted to do? Now the question is popping up in your head how will I pay for it.

Take a Deep Breath

Start with a deep breath; it鈥檚 totally possible to afford cosmetology school. Better still, you鈥檒l find that good programs are open to flexible payment options and have employees dedicated to helping you find the money you need to attend.

It鈥檚 a Funding Portfolio

What you should know is that most cosmetology students don鈥檛 find the money they need for school from a single source. It鈥檚 more of a funding portfolio drawing from any number of places (and usually from many sources). If you can鈥檛 pay for it out of savings from your high school job or find a single loan to cover school, you鈥檙e not alone. And, there are a lot more options than you may think.

Personal Savings and Family Assistance

The best place to start is always the money that鈥檚 already in the bank. Whether you鈥檝e been working for several years (and hopefully you鈥檝e saved some of that cash) or your parents are willing to assist with part of the cost of your education,  look at these options first.

While grants and scholarships are offered 鈥 they鈥檙e not guaranteed, so you don鈥檛 want to bank on them until you know you have them.

Part-Time (or Full-Time) Work

Can you work part-time while studying full-time (or vice versa)? If you鈥檝e arranged flexible payments with your cosmetology school, you鈥檒l be able to offset some of the needed money this way. That鈥檚 not to say you should overextend yourself; you鈥檒l be very busy with your studies. But, if you can squeeze in some part-time or seasonal work, it鈥檚 not a bad idea.

Grants and Scholarships

Grants are money that doesn鈥檛 have to be repaid. There are several types of grants available through the U.S. Department of Education and other sources.

Scholarships, like grants, do not have to be paid back. 海角社区s, along with other schools, community groups and other organizations offer scholarships.

Educational Loans from the Government or Banks

And finally, there are plenty of loan options available. You can apply for federal financial aid and loans. Government subsidized loans are typically the best options, as you will pay less in interest and fees. But, that doesn鈥檛 mean you should rule out loans from private banks 鈥 especially if you鈥檝e been a customer for many years.

Just remember to consider all funding options first 鈥 loans stick with you until you鈥檝e paid them off. You owe it to yourself to find out what options you have that can make starting your dream career a reality.

Take the next step and meet with your school鈥檚 Career Planning Specialist, who can help guide you every step of the way.

It鈥檚 easy to think there鈥檚 plenty of time to get organized for cosmetology school. But, if you are confident that鈥檚 where you鈥檙e going 鈥 it鈥檚 never too early to get started.

Take the Right Classes Your Senior Year

Senior year is often a chance to take the classes you really want or the ones that are best for your future plans. If you鈥檙e looking at a cosmetology degrees, there are a few classes where you should focus your efforts, even if they鈥檙e not required for your high school diploma.

Art is an obvious choice. Look for anything that allows you to work with color. And, if your school offers photography, you won鈥檛 believe how useful that will be in the future. Speech is perfect for developing your conversational skills, as is debate or interpersonal communication. And, yes, biology will help you exponentially in your future career because cosmetologists need to know about anatomy.

Think about Where You Want to Work

There are differences between state licensing criteria. If you live on the border of two states, or you want to move to another part of the country, think about this before looking at cosmetology schools. Be sure that you get licensed at your school鈥攖ransferring a license from state to state is easier than trying to transfer cosmetology school hours.

Consider Cosmetology Schools Seriously

Not all cosmetology schools are equal. Really. Spend time looking at your options and don鈥檛 settle on the school that鈥檚 closest to you. You want the best possible education, not just an education.

Look at Every Scholarship Opportunity

There are scholarships for cosmetology students, and you should spend time looking at all of the options. Make long lists of everything out there 鈥 along with application dates. Talk to your guidance counselor鈥攖hey will know about local scholarship opportunities.

Prepare for Your Studies

There鈥檚 a lot you can do to start cosmetology school on the right foot. Create a budget, develop a calendar for scholarship deadlines and school applications. Then plan your start date and visit schools.

You are on your way to making your dreams happen.
